New to my Yamaha SG’s collection a rare 1980s cream Yamaha SG-510 electric guitar. The Yamaha SG-510 was introduced in 1984 as a follow up to the earlier Yamaha SG-300 and Yamaha SG-400 that were issued in 1978-1979 as an addition to the initial Yamaha SG line up. The 510 appears to have been mainly made for the Japan market and is much lighter than the Yamaha SG-500, 700, 1500 and 2000 that were produced since 1976.
The SG-510 was produced in mainly red, black and a special issue in blue, with the blue being the rarest and referring to the famous Japanese guitarist Noyori Takanaka. The SG-510 is a light-weight and excellent guitar and its flat design and lighter weight makes it easy to play, it has low action with a powerful sound from 2 high output double humbuckers. A black version of this guitar was used by Andy Taylor of Duran Duran on the live recordings of “Rio”, although he appears to also using an SG-90.
