Best Red Special in my collection. Fans of Queen or Brian May will know the famous Guild replicas of the red special. Here the signature model as made by Guild Guitar Company. In the early 1990s Guild collaborated with Dr Brian May to replicate the original Red Special as designed and made by the May family. Rumour has it that the design was by Brian and the actual making was done by his gather from easy accessible materials out of the home environment
“Spring of 1964, Brian May, then a student at Hampton, Middlesex, and his father, an electronics engineer, worked on a project to make an electric guitar. After two years the “Red Special” emerged. This guitar, Brian’s principal instrument, would become a key part of “Queen’s” sound.
In 1994, the US based Guild Guitar Co. and Brian worked closely together to produce 316 close replicas of the “Red Special”, which had to match the quality and special features of the custom-made original guitar. Of these 316, it appears that only a 100 were issues as the “Signature Model” displaying Brian’s Signature on the back of the headstock.
The body is made out of mahogany. The fingerboard is made out of high-grade ebony with low square frets for fast easy action. The neck is wider than most electrics (1-13/16 at the nut) allowing for string bending and full control of chords with the left hand or even for the slide or bottleneck. The guitar has 24 frets allowing for a vast range of tones. The head of the guitar is arrow shaped so as to position the tuning pegs almost in line with the strings, giving it minimum bending stress at the nut. The graphite nut positions the strings horizontally, with an added zero fret. This model is by far one of the better guitars made by the Guild Company and a must for the Queen fan.
