After the acquisition of Fender by CBS in the 1979s, some of Fenders key guitar builders appeared to be unhappy with the direction the company was heading. In the early 1970s a small team of these breakaway craftsmen formed what would become Musicman, this included Leo Fender himself.
The early days of Musicman saw designs like the Stingray Bass, the Stingray Guitar and other lesser known models such as the Cutlass, The Sabre and other models. Where Fender opted for mass production, Musicman opted to endorse musicians with influence, such as Tony Levin, John Petrucci, Eddie van Halen to name but a few.
