Rickenbacker is one of the important names in guitar history and is widely credited with producing the world’s first commercially successful electric guitars. The company traces its roots to 1931, when Adolph Rickenbacker and George Beauchamp founded the Electro String Instrument Corporation in California.
In 1932, the company introduced the famous “Frying Pan” lap steel guitar, generally regarded as the first production electric guitar. Its innovative magnetic pickup helped lay the foundation for all modern electric guitars.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Rickenbacker developed its distinctive semi-hollow electric guitars, known for their bright, chiming “jangle” tone. The company’s popularity exploded when The Beatles, particularly John Lennon and George Harrison, began using Rickenbacker guitars. This helped define the sound of the British Invasion and later influenced countless rock, pop, and alternative bands
Rickenbacker basses became equally legendary. The 4001 and later 4003 basses gained a reputation for their powerful, punchy tone and distinctive styling, becoming favourites of progressive rock, hard rock, and metal bassists.
