Fender Stratocaster Anniversary (1979, Aged Silver “Gold”)

In 1979, Fender commemorated the Stratocaster’s 25th anniversary (first introduced in 1954) with its inaugural “anniversary” model, also marking the first time a Fender Guitar was released in a predetermined, numbered, limited edition. Approximately 500 instruments were initially finished in Pearl White. However, due to the finish’s instability and excessive cracking, many were recalled and refinished in Porsche Silver (referred to by Fender as “25th Anniversary Stratocaster Silver”), which became the standard for subsequent early production runs. Presented here is one of these second-series instruments in fair condition, its silver finish having matured to a near-golden sheen.

The guitar features the iconic contoured Stratocaster body crafted from Ash, a large headstock, a 3-bolt maple neck, and tuners arranged six-a-side. The maple fretboard spans 21 frets. Its hardware includes a chrome tremolo bridge, an engraved neck plate, and tuners. The electronics consist of three single-coil pickups, a 5-way pickup selector switch, the standard Volume and two Tone controls, and a front-placed jack socket.

Fender Anniversary Stratocaster (1979, Silver)

In 1979, Fender celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Stratocaster (introduced in 1954) with its first “anniversary” instrument, and the first Fender Guitar to be issued in a pre-determined and numbered, limited quantity. A small run of 500 or so instruments produced were finished in Pearl White. However, due to the instability and excessive checking of the finish, many were recalled and re-finished in Porsche Silver (though Fender refers to it as “25th Anniversary Stratocaster Silver”), the color that was used in the rest of the production run. So here we have one of these Silver series in near mint condition.

Here a 1976 Gibson Explorer, in Natural Korina Wood, limited edition as labelled on the back of the headstock.

This Gibson model was the re-release of one of their 1950’s more iconic designs, the Explorer, as a run of 1800 guitars split into two designations: The standard model, and a limited edition model. The limited edition guitars had one main difference: a baseball bat sized, 50’s style neck. The limited edition guitars are well sought after, both for playability and style, and for their association with a number of guitarists, most notably The Edge, from U2, who used a ’76 Explorer for the majority of U2’s discography, and toured with it for years, until it was retired and eventually sold at auction for $240,000

Despite the angular look it balances well and plays well too. Originally designed in 1957, Explorers, Flying Vs and the rare Modernes have become collectible guitars. This example lives in its rectangular hard-case.

Gibson Les Paul Deluxe (1972, Cherry Sunburst)

Posted by Elite Vintage Guitars - Gearpage on 25/08/2019
Posted in: Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. Tagged: Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. 1 Comment

This 1972 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe is fine solid body guitar with the standard sized body, and the factory embossed mini humbucker pick ups. The guitar has been played and shows some genuine wear on the back. The hardware is chrome, giving it that proper patina. It is one of nicest guitars to play in the collection. Serial dates the guitar to 1972. These Gibson’s were made during the 1960s, 1970s and have become more collectible in recent years. There have also been some reissues.
Therefore we have here a gorgeous original Gibson Les Paul. Just a bit lighter than a custom but very easy to handle and a smooth neck profile. The guitar is an old school LP design and sound wise it is awesome as the Mini Humbuckers produce a great sound.  The fret board is proper quality rose wood, which coupled with the slim tapered neck make for a “fast” guitar. Guitar lives in its beaten up hard-case.

Yamaha SG-85 (1974, Mahogany)

Posted in: Yamaha SG-85. Tagged: Yamaha SG-85. Leave a comment

In addition to the famous double cutaway Yamaha SGs like the SG-1000 and 2000, Yamaha Corp made some single cutaway SG’s in the early 1970s, resembling a more rounded Les Paul shape. An example of a single cutaway guitar is the Yamaha SG-85. This was the top of the range of these guitars, that were produced during a short period from 1972-1974 in the run up to the famous SG-175 and the later SG-2000 series. The guitar built from Honduran Mahogany  with a Mahogany set neck. The fretboard is ebony with mother of pearl chevron style inlays. Typical weight of these models was around the 3.5 kgs. The sound of these vintage gems is outstanding, produced by a simple 2 tone/2 vol arrangement with a 3-way pick up selector switch. Hardware was gold plated with a gilded diecast 6 saddle terminator type hardtail stop bar. The sound of this model is full, with a strong presence, ideal for rock and rhythm. The 3 models in this particular line up were the Yamaha SG-45, 65 and 85.  Guitar is all original and lives in its original orange faux fur lined hard case.

Gibson Les Paul Memphis Bass (2015, Tobacco Sunburst)

Here something different, a great looking Les Paul semi hollow short scale bass, the Memphis model. Built 2015, Despite the negative press some 2015 Les Paul models received, this plays superb and looks cool too. For a short scale Bass it’s very versatile. The short scale make it very easy to handle as well as the weight which is a mere 3.5 kgs. The hum-buckers are good too and provide a nice punchy sound. In over drive the bass does produce a great sound well too.

Gibson Les Paul Recording (1970-2, Natural Wood)

Here we have an unusual  Gibson Les Paul Recording guitar sporting a vast array of tone options, the collectible Gibson Les Paul Recording, With the discontinuation of the Les Paul Personal in 1969, Gibson saved some of Les Paul’s innovations for the guitar that eventually became his favourite guitar model, the Les Paul Recording Model. This guitar was designed to used mainly as a tool in the recording studio, the Les Paul  Recording featured a dual set of diagonal, low impedance pickups that could send sounds directly to a recording console or as Les Paul did as he used this model for live shows, a flip of a switch activated the high end of the custom low/high impedance circuitry for use with a standard amp. The Les Paul Recording Model stayed in production until 1979, with several thousand guitars produced. Although much rarer than the mass produced Les Paul models, this has become a highly collectable guitar. Guitar lives in its purple lined hard-case.

Yamaha SG-90 (1974, Red)

Posted in: Yamaha SG-90. Tagged: Yamaha SG-90. Leave a comment

Prior to the famous Yamaha SG-175 and Yamaha SG-2000, Yamaha Music Corporation produced a series of early Yamaha SG double cutaway prototypes. These were the Yamaha SG-30, 35, 50, 70. In 1974 the phenomenal and relatively successful SG-90 and SG-175 were released. Here is a rare example of the SG-90, it is a more sober version of the top of the range, early SG-175 with a phenomenal playability and versatile sound. This is a truly great electric guitar with lots of mojo and a definite vintage vibe.
The guitar has a solid Honduran mahogany body with a set neck, rosewood fret board with mother of pearl dot position markers and embossed serial number, Chrome Hardware and Tuning pegs. The sound is through 2 high output Yamaha pick ups.  The guitar has aged nicely with its binding nicely faded to a clotted creamy colour.  Yamaha SG-90 guitars were made from 1974 till 1975 in translucent Black, Natural Wood, Walnut and  Red. Notable players of this axe included Barney Kessel and Andy Taylor of Duran Duran.

Yamaha SG-3000 (1984, Wine-burst)

Posted by Elite Vintage Guitars - Gearpage on 24/07/2019
Posted in: Yamaha SG-3000. Tagged: Yamaha SG-3000. 1 Comment

Here a well kept Yamaha SG-3000, a top quality guitar made in Japan 1984. The Yamaha SG-3000 is the top of the Yamaha SG ;line up and an upgrade from the SG-2000 model and built from maple and mahogany with a mahogany thru body neck in a so-called “T-cross construction” mode. The fretboard is bound ebony  with mother of pearl/abalone split wing style inlays. Typical weight of these models was around the 4.4 kgs. Hardware was gold plated with a gold stop bar. Unlike the SG-2000, the SG-3000 does not have a brass sustain block under the bridge and the bridge is a narrower type than the SG-2000 models. The sound of this model is strong, coming  from 2 open humbuckers. The electronics are controlled with 2 Amber Speedial 2V/2T Push/Push Coil Tap on tone pots and a 3 way toggler switch.  The guitar stands out with the finish topped off with elaborate binding in abalone. It once more demonstrates the Yamaha luthiers’ craftsmanship. The Yamaha SG-3000 is considered by many to be the ultimate SG.

Guild BHM-01, Signature Pro (Black, 1993)

Posted in: Guild Brian May BHM-01. Tagged: Guild BHM-01. Leave a comment

Here a rare as hens teeth, a black Brian May Signature Guild Red Special model. Fans of Queen or Brian May will know the famous Guild replicas of the red special. Here the signature model as made by the Guild Guitar Company. In the early 1990s Guild collaborated with Dr Brian May to replicate the original Red Special as designed and made by the May family. Guild Guitar Co. and Brian worked together to produce 316 close replicas of the “Red Special”, which had to match any special features of the custom-made original guitar. Of these 316, it appears that only around a 100 were issued as the “Signature Model” bearing Brian’s Signature on the back of the headstock. There were about 30 made in green, and a handful in other colours like black or white. Unconfirmed sources stipulate there were less than 5 black and white finishes. The guitar sports a Mahogany body, Ebony, 24-fret fingerboard, and wider neck (1-13/16 at the nut) allowing for string bending and use of a slide or bottleneck. This model is by far one of the better guitars made by the Guild Company and a must for any Brian May or Queen fan.
