Gibson Explorer (1976, Korina Wood)

Here a 1976 Gibson Explorer, in Natural Korina Wood, limited edition as labelled on the back of the headstock.

This Gibson model was the re-release of one of their 1950’s more iconic designs, the Explorer, as a run of 1800 guitars split into two designations: The standard model, and a limited edition model. The limited edition guitars had one main difference: a baseball bat sized, 50’s style neck. The limited edition guitars are well sought after, both for playability and style, and for their association with a number of guitarists, most notably The Edge, from U2, who used a ’76 Explorer for the majority of U2’s discography, and toured with it for years, until it was retired and eventually sold at auction for $240,000

Despite the angular look it balances well and plays well too. Originally designed in 1957, Explorers, Flying Vs and the rare Modernes have become collectible guitars. This example lives in its rectangular hard-case.
